...VIP application - I'm in...
POSTED AT 05:36 AM
I'm very happy after knowing that I got accepted on my VIP (Volunteer Internship Program)
application with Information Systems Software Quality Assurance Team. Actually, I can't put
into words how much happiness I felt inside. I feel like bursting into tears i guess or laughter
maybe.. whatever.. basta, all I know is that I'm excited with this..
I've had my interview last November 4, Tuesday, 5pm. I actually went home from shift, 8am
and went back on the said call time, 5pm. I actually would like to request the call time to be
earlier than said. But, it occurs to me that, it's just fine since PeopleSupport is just a ride
from home. And also, I don't want to have a premadonna impression from them. So, I look
for the interviewer. I'm pretty nervous but I didn't let that feeling affect my
stand. Mark was pretty cool during the interview. I wasn't intimidated by him. He was like my
previous boss when he interviewed me. We're conversing like were friends or something. I
like this type of interview. The goal is more of objective not subjective. I find it mature type
of interview.
During the interview:
Interviewer: <looking at my VIP application form and scanning my CV> Upon reading your VIP
application form, It seems that you would not fit the position. Reading through your expectations,
like telephony, networking, it seems that you are more interested in that field. Having it read,
would you still be pursuing your VIP application with us?
Me: So, you mean to say, IT department is not open for VIP applicants? May I know the
nature of your department?
Interviewer: Yes. IT department is not open for VIP as of the moment. Our department is IS
Software Quality Assurance under IS RND Team. We deal with testing Softwares, its
functionality and the likes.
Me: Do you require any experience with programming languages? Because I don't have
any programming knowledge.
Interviewer: Not necessarily. You mean, you don't have any basic knowledge about C, C++
and the likes?
Me: No. Only html. I self studied.
Interviewer: Well, that's fine. At least you have the logic because that matters.
Me: <laughs>
Interviewer: So, would you still be pursuing your VIP application with us?
Me: Yes.
Interviewer: Why?
Me: Because I wanna learn.
Interviewer: That's an impressive answer.
Me: <smiles>
Interviewer: So, tell me more about the nature of your job with Emerson. Don't you know
that Emerson is a big company and they actually bought Sykes now. And I'm telling
you, you are an ECE board passer right? so If you actually applied there, and you
are an Engineer, your salary is way too high compare to your salary here. <smile>. Well,
I'm not telling you to apply there but I'm just giving you the options you have outside
PS. <smiles> Plus, you will not take calls but basically you're considered as an Engineer.
Me: <smiles> Yes. I'm aware of that. My previous company is formerly known as Astec Power
Inc., and recently Emerson completely bought the company and change its name to Emerson
Network Power.
Interviewer: Can you tell me the nature of your work with Emerson?
Me: Well, I'm a Quality Initiatives Cadet Engineer. I belong to the Quality Initiatives group
that handle projects for company's improvement. The group has so many projects, and it so
happened that I was given the opportunity to handle one of its project, Auto - PFMEA (Process
Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) Software. I'm not the developer of the software. I just coordinate
the project within Cavite and China sites. We have a programmer. I dealt with Managers and Engineers.
Interviewer:So, why did you leave your previous job. It seems like you have very nice
experience there. You're like a Project Manager right? Why are you here?
Me: I knew you gonna ask me that question. <laughs> I knew it. Yes, my previous
company gave me very good experience. But, to be honest, I want to look for opportunities
in Manila. Coz, my work is provincial based so, the salary is way to low compared to what is
being offered here in Manila.
Interviewer: Yeah, practically speaking.
Me: Yeah. <smiles>
Interviewer: So, this is how I interview. Relax. It's suppose to be my boss interviewing
you guys but I said, let me handle it coz i don't want the applicants to be
intimidated by our boss that's why I conducted all the interview here in our team.
Me: <laughs> Yeah. Pretty cool huh.
Interviewer: So, tell me anything you want. Anything under the sun.
Me: <laughs> What do you want to know? I don't know what to say.
Interviewer: Hmm.. I need to ask you something.
Me: <laughs> Come on, ask me anything.. Come on..
Interviewer: How will you test for example the functionality of Google Web site?
I think for a few seconds, then I answered,
Me: Do i know that Google is a search engine site initially when it was first laid to me?
Interviewer: Yes.
Me: Hmm.. First off, I would think of a credible Web site which has meta tags and
keywords already submitted to the search engine sites. Then, I would test Google by
typing in one of the keywords, if the site is searchable, that means Google functions
properly.
Interviewer: Good. But, what else do you need to check on?
Me: Hmm.. I need to click on the searched site and make sure it's pulling up?
Interviewer: ok. But, there's one thing you also need to check on. You also need to check on
the alternative path. Meaning, you also need to check the error mode.
Me: I see. Interesting.
Interviewer: So, I'm pretty impressed with your interest to learn. To be honest, we have 5 aspiring
applicants and that includes you. However, as much as I want to accept all of you guys, but
we only need two. So, goodluck and I hope you'll be accepted.
Me: No problem. Thank you.
So, there goes the interview.. that's how I remembered it all.. hehehehe..
It's nice to know that our company has this kind of program, VIP thingy, which would
serve as a window for greener pastures if you are looking for a career other than being
a call center agent. I'm more than eager to take this opportunity. I felt like it would be
my stepping stone to achieve my goals. Finally.
I won't have any additional pay for taking this internship. It's not what I'm after for.
Really. I'm more than interested in the knowledge and the skills that I will be gaining
during the internship period. Of course, I would stay in office more than I usually do.
Say, two hours more. It could be before my shift or after my shift. It depends on the
schedule they will be providing. I'll have my orientation on November 12. I'm really excited.
I thank God for answering my prayers. Thanks.
